Like waffles and ice cream or sunshine and green grass, sometimes things just work better in combinations. LucasArts happened upon another unusual pairing in 2005 in Star Wars and Lego, creating first a game and then a series that would go on to be one of the most popular in the industry.
As LucasArts' Cameron Suey told us in a recent interview, the success of Lego Star Wars lies in the strengths of both the movies and the Danish toy brand.
"The whimsy, the fun and the customisability of Lego along with the story and the epic action and the characters of Star Wars make for a really fantastic combination," says Suey.
"It's something that everybody in the whole family got behind. It's easy to play. Kids can play. Adults can play They can also play together through the unique drop-in drop-out co-op, which allows you to hop in and start playing at any time. It was a huge hit."
Huge is no overstatement. Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and Lego Star Wars: The Original Trilogy were among the biggest games of the past two years and together they sold more than 10 million copies. For the 30th anniversary of the first Star Wars movie, LucasArts is back behind the lightsaber, with a new game that collects these two hits and adds a few new features too.
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga tracks the story across all six episodes in the story, from the Jar-Jar heavy Episode One: The Phantom Menace all the way through to Episode Six: Return Of The Jedi.
For the new game, LucasArts has done more than simply bring together the two previous games. Instead, they've gone back in to fine-tune the stuff already there and add new gameplay elements along the way.
Among the new features, according to Suey, are new characters to play as (well over 100 in total), gameplay modes to try out and levels to play in. And for those who can't stop themselves from finding every secret games have to offer, there are also many more unlockable goodies and collectible items.
