Four months is time enough for the unstoppable locomotive of progress to chug deep into new territory. The problem for European buyers of the PlayStation 3 is that they've been left behind, and for a while at least the name of the game for the PS3 here is catch-up.

Resistance: Fall Of Man comes close to falling victim to the delay thanks to the arrival of flashier games such as Gears Of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas, but there's enough on this crowded Blu-ray disc to treat new owners to a highly playable experience.

"The diversity found in the weapons allows for an engaging experience."

Resistance is best thought of as two games - a drawn out singleplayer that suffers from its belated debut and a furious multiplayer that succeeds in spite of it. Uniting them is Ted Price and developer Insomniac's fascination with weapons, honed in the Ratchet & Clank series and brought to its less playful zenith here. While the team's better-known series encases its destruction in armour of whimsy, the body is riddled with vermin in Resistance, exposing us to the ugliness of alien invasion.

More often developers are turning to open-ended game design to better involve the audience, making them feel as if they're in control of their destiny. While I'd be lying if I said you could play Resistance like that, the diversity found in the weapons allows for a more engaging experience. Storming a room armed with your standard Carbine automatic rifle to rat-a-tat your enemies is a world away from scorching everything in sight with the help of a napalm-like Air-fuel grenade. The set pieces don't change, but how you handle yourself within these strict confines is up to you.

Which makes it so frustrating that the overly long singleplayer game drips new weapons into your armoury so slowly. Nathan Hale is such an insipid character that there is little emotional reason to play through the singleplayer, other than perhaps an interest in seeing what becomes of the marauding Chimerans that serve as your enemies in this alternate history of post-World War I Europe, where Hitler's Nazis have been replaced by creatures from outer space.

Resistance does itself no favours by hardly pushing the PS3 with its lifeless character models, sombre voiceover and pre-Gears of War-level graphics choking in browns and greens. Launch games in general and first-party games in particular serve as ambassadors to a new world, and Resistance's well-intentioned welcoming party has been spoiled by the cool kids over at Microsoft.
