Sony decided to treat us all - well, "us" who could afford a PS3 - to a nice, shiny HD version of the arcade and PSP versions of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection as an advertisement for their online download service, the PlayStation Store.

I say "treat," but they still charge money for it of course - yet that's where the first nicety comes in: the game is just $20 in the United States and a mere £6.99 in the UK (until the end of May at least, when it'll go up to £9.99). Either way, it's bargainous for the game that you end up getting.

Any fans of Tekken will know what to expect - no, it isn't the tech-insanity that is Virtua Fighter, and fans of that series should stay away instead of slagging it off, but for what it does, the Tekken series is sublime. It's simple enough for an idiot to play and it's got enough depth for real masters to forge their craft - but at the same time it doesn't drown itself in ridiculous technicalities that force persons with a much shorter attention span (yo) to seek something with more thrills.

That's basically a roundabout way of saying: 'I don't like Virtua Fighter because I can't do it, whereas I've been able to do King's five-throw combo since Tekken 2.'

"The game does look lovely in HD - not stunning, but still damn good."

The selling point for this game is obviously the magical HDified nature of it, and the game does look utterly lovely in the higher resolutions - not stunning, as it is simply an upscaled version of a fairly old game, but still damn good. What about those of you living in past-land though? Is it worth the monies if you don't have any technologies from the future in your house? I'd say yes, most likely.

The price point for the game isn't something to be sniffed at, as the package includes the full arcade mode, a ghost battle mode - fighting against the records of Tekken players from across the globe - and the obvious versus mode. All this, along with a plethora of customisation options and downloadable content (movies, music etc.) make for a thoroughly lovely package, at a great price.

The game itself is another version of Dark Resurrection, which we're obviously used to. There are a load of characters, two of which new, and there is the ability to play as cheating arse BASTARD Jinpachi, who feels so less cheaty when you are in control of him. Hmm. Anyway, it's standard Tekken fare. And I love it. The game has a flow that keeps everything feeling far too sexy and in multiplayer it's one of the best games to piss about on for a couple of hours. Though that last point is mainly because I win a lot.

Of course, there are bad points - the ghost battle mode seems pretty pointless, as the 'people' you fight don't seem to have any kind of different style to them, merely the 'better' ones appear to be set to a higher difficulty level. Pah. The depth of the game certainly won't appeal to the fighting game purists, but shut it - it's dirt cheap and it's brilliant.

THE VERDICT:
Tekken is ace, and for the miniature price tag, it's a steal. If you own the PSP version (see our review of it here) it does make this conversion a bit pointless, but the benefits of HD Glory(tm) and one-machine multiplayer mean this is a game that shouldn't be sniffed at. A sterling addition to the world of downloadable content.
