Wii Sports

Whether or not you think Wii Sports is 'free' should really depend on how good or bad it is.

Graphically this game looks terrible at first, using incredibly simple avatars that get repeated and have missing legs, but soon you realise this is actually part of the game's charm, and an introducing some of Wii's integrated features. You can utilise the Wii's 'Mii' player profile system and put your very own personalised avatar into the game.

You can't help but giggle, particularly in baseball we found, as avatars of you and your friends bob around trying to catch the ball. The style also makes Wii Sports' various games very approachable for non-gamers - perfect for Nintendo's mission to broaden the gamer market - but it may put off the more hardcore gamers, especially with more serious options like Madden, or even Mario Strikers Charged coming up.

"Nintendo is to be praised for bundling the ideal pack-in - its first in a long, long time."

This game makes a great first impression, and will keep you occupied for a few hours, but unfortunately not much longer than that. The choice in games is limited to five, and of those only Tennis and Bowling really leap out at you and feel really special. There's a good reason why Tennis and Bowling are the two most talked about games in Wii Sports - they feel most like their real-life sport, and nobody having a go at them can fail to 'get it'.

Baseball and Golf are rather average and repetitive though, and boxing is just abysmal as it feels like the avatar isn't reacting to all of your movements. There is a training mode that creates slight variations to these five games, but again, they won't keep you entertained for long.

Sports is a great way to get you used to the Wii controls, and is very easy to navigate, so any fears of the Wii remote are put to rest. It's a fun experience for anyone and everyone, and you don't have to pay anything extra for it.

Nintendo is to be praised for bundling the ideal pack-in - its first in a long time, and a very smart move when you think how anyone in your family or local OAP home / farm / boardroom can play this instead immediately, if not the shiny new copy of Zelda you bought with your Wii purchase. Yet.

THE VERDICT:
It's not like you have a choice to buy Wii Sports if you're getting a Wii, but fortunately it's a worthy pack-in that's well presented, polished, and heaps of fun, if a little short of its potential.
